12^th Mantra of Kathopanishada

(बारहवां मन्त्र )

स्वर्गे लोक न भयं किञ्चनास्ति न तत्र त्वं न जरया बिभेति।
उभे तीर्त्वाशनायापिपासे शेकातिगो मोदते स्वर्गलोके ॥१२॥

(नचिकेता ने कहा) स्वर्गलोक में किञ्चिन्मात्र भी भय नहीं है। वहां आप (मृत्यु) भी नहीं हैं। वहां कोई वृद्धावस्था से नहीं डरता। स्वर्गलोक के निवासी भूख-प्यास दोनों को पार करके शोक से दूर रहकर सुख भोगते हैं।

(Nachiketa said): “There is no fear in the Heaven. You (Death) are also not there. There is no fear of old age. Having crossed beyond both hunger and thirst and being above grief. Thus the man who has attained Heaven remains there with all happiness.”

11th Mantra of Katopanishada

(ग्यारहवां मन्त्र)

यथा पुरस्ताद् भविता प्रतीत औद्दालकिरारुणिर्मत्प्रसृष्ट:।

सुखं रात्री: शयिता वीतमन्युस्त्वां ददृशिवान्मृत्युमुखात्प्रमुक्तम् ॥११॥

(यमराज ने नचिकेता से कहा) तुझे मृत्यु के मुख से प्रमुक्त हुआ देखने पर, मेरे द्वारा प्रेरित आरुणि उद्दालक (तुम्हारे पिता) पहले की भांति ही विश्वास करके क्रोध एवं दु:ख से रहित हो जायेंगे, रात्रियों में सुखपूर्वक् सोयेंगे।

(Yama replied :) “By my intercession, the son of Arun, Uddalaka (the father of Nachiketa), will recognize you as before, and will lose his anger." In the night he shall sleep happily, for having seen you return from the mouth of death”.

10th Mantra of Kathopanishada.

(दसवां मन्त्र)

शान्तसकल्प: सुमना यथा स्याद्वीतमन्युगौर्तमों माभि मृत्यो।

त्वत्प्रसृष्टं माभिवदेत्प्रतीत एतत्त्रयाणां प्रथमं वरं वृणे ॥१०॥

(नचिकेता ने उत्तर दिया) हे (यम) मृत्युदेव, गौतमवंशीय (मेरे पिता) उद्दालक मेरे प्रति शान्त संकल्पवाले, प्रसन्नचित और क्रोधरहित हो जायं, आपके द्वारा वापस भेजे जाने पर वे मुझ पर विश्वास करते हुए मेरे साथ प्रेमपूर्वक बात करें, (मैं) यह तीन में से प्रथम वर मांगता हूं।

Nachiketa replies: “O Yama(the Ruler of death)! My father, Gotham (Uddhalak), be free from anxious thought (about me). May he lose all anger (towards me) and be pacified in heart, and that he may know me and greet me, when I shall be sent away by you."

9th Mantra of Kathopanishad.

(नौवां मन्त्र)

तिस्त्रो रात्रीर्यदवात्सीर्गृहे मे अनश्नन् ब्रह्मन्नतिथिर्नमस्य:।
नमस्ते अस्तु ब्रह्मन् स्वस्ति में अस्तु तस्मात् प्रति त्रीन् बरान् वृणीष्व॥९॥

(यमराज ने कहा) हे ब्राह्मण देवता, आप वन्दनीय अतिथि हैं। मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ। हे ब्राह्मण देवता, मेरा कल्याण हो (मेरे अशुभ नष्ट हों)। आपने जो तीन रात्रियां मेरे घर में बिना भोजन किये ही निवास किया,उसके लिए आप मुझसे प्रत्येक के बदले एक (अर्थात तीन) वर मांग लें।

(Yama said) "Oh, Brahman, since you, venerable guest, has been in my home three days without taking food; I salute you. I hereby pray to you to have that sin removed. Pick as compensation three boons (one for each night of your stay)."

Kathopanishad

8th Mantra of kathopanishad.

(आठवां मन्त्र)

आशा प्रतीक्षे संगतं सूनृतां च इष्टापूर्ते पुत्रपशूंश्च सर्वान्।
एतद् वृड्क्ते पुरुषस्याल्पमेधसो यस्यानश्नन् वसति ब्राह्मणो गृहे ॥८॥

(यमराज की पत्नी ने यमराज से कहा) जिसके घर में ब्राह्मण बिना भोजन किये रहता है (उस) मन्दबुद्धि पुरुष की आशा और प्रतीक्षा, उनकी पूर्ति से प्राप्त् होनेवाले सुख, सुन्दर वाणी के फल, इष्ट एवं आपूर्त शुभ कर्मो के फल तथा सब पुत्र और पशु आदि (ब्राह्मण के असत्कार से ) नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

In the house of that foolish man which a Brahmin guest stays without taking any food, all his hopes and expectations, all the merit gained by his association with the holy , the fruits of his pious utterances, and the fruits of his good deeds, sacrifices, as well as his sons and cattle all are destroyed by him.
