27^th Mantra of Kathopanishada.

(सत्ताइस्वाँ मन्त्र)

न वित्तेन तर्पणीयो मनुष्यो लप्स्यामहे वित्तमद्राक्ष्म चेत् त्वा।
जीविष्यामो यावदीशिष्यसि त्वं वरस्तु मे वरणीय: स एव॥२७॥

(नचिकेता ने कहा) मनुष्य धन से तृप्त नहीं होता। जब (हमने) आपके दर्शन पा लिये हैं, तो धन (भी) हम प्राप्त ही कर लेंगे। जब तक आप चाहेंगे हम जीवित भी रहेंगे। इसलिए मुझको तो वह वर ही माँगना है।

(Nachiketa said :) “Man can never be satisfied with material things (because desire comes next by next even if one fulfilled. The next desire will start at the immediate moment). Now that I have seen you (Death), I shall obtain wealth as it is. As long as you rule I shall live. Therefore that boon alone wants to achieve.”

26^th Mantra of Kathopanishada.

(छब्बीसवां मन्त्र)         

श्वो भावा मर्त्यस्य यदन्तकैतत् सर्वेन्द्रियाणां जरयन्ति तेज:।
अपि सर्वम् जीवितमल्पेमेव तवैव वाहास्तव नृत्यगीते ॥२६॥

(नचिकेता ने कहा ) हे यमराज (मृत्यु) ! यह कल तक ही रहनेवाले (नश्वर) भोग मरणशील मनुष्य की समस्त इन्द्रियों के तेज को क्षीण कर देते हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त समस्त जीवन थोड़ा ही है। (इसलिए) आपके रथादि वाहन, स्वर्ग के नृत्य और संगीत आपके ही पास रहें।

Nachiketa said :) “O (Lord) Yama! “These things last till tomorrow (ephemeral), and they weaken the vigor of all the senses in man. Even the longest life is short. Keep your vehicles and your songs and dances (I have no interest in them).”

25th Mantra of Kathopanishada

(पचीसवाँ मन्त्र)

ये ये कामा दुर्लभा मर्त्यलोके सर्वान् कामांश्छन्दत: प्रार्थयस्व।

इमा रामा: सरथा: सतूर्या न हीदृशा लम्भनीया मनुष्यै:।
आभिर्मत्प्रत्ताभि: परिचारयस्व् नचिकेतो मरणं मानुप्राक्षी ॥२५॥

(यमराज ने कहा) संसार (मृत्युलोक) में जो जो भोग (कामनायें) दुर्लभ हैं उन सब भोगों को इच्छानुसार मांग लो। रथों सहित बाजों (वाद्यों) के साथ इन स्वर्ग की अप्सराओं (रमणीय स्त्रियों) को मांग लो, मेरे द्वारा प्रदत्त इनसे अपनी सेवा कराओ। (निश्‍चय ही) ऐसी स्त्रियॉँ साधारण मनुष्यों द्वारा प्राप्य नहीं हैं। हे नचिकेता ! मृत्यु के संबंध में मत पूछो ।.

(Yama said): “Choose for the desires which are difficult to satisfy in the world of mortals. Here you have these maidens with instruments and chariots. They (their beauty) cannot be even dreamt of by human beings. They shall serve you. O Nachiketa! I can grant you all of the above things. But do not ask me questions concerning death.”

कठोपनिषद

24^th Mantra of Kathopanishada.

(चौबीसवां मन्त्र)

एतत्तुल्यं यदि मन्यसे वरं वृणीष्व वित्तं चिरजीविकां च।

महाभूभौ नचिकेतस्त्वमेधि कामानां त्वा कामभाजं करोमि॥२४॥

(यमराज ने कहा) यदि तुम इस वर के तुल्य (किसी अन्य) वर को मांगना चाहते हो तो मांग लो धन और चिरजीविका को माँग लो। हे नचिकेता! तुम इस महान् पृथ्वी पर वृद्धि करो, शासन करो तुम्हें (समस्त) कामनाओं का भोग करने वाला बना देता हूँ |

(Yama said): “If you consider any boon equal to this, demand wealth and long life, and be the ruler over the wide Earth. O Nachiketa, I shall make you the enjoyer of your all desires.”

कठोपनिषद

23^rd Mantra of Kathopanishada

(तेइसवां मन्त्र)

शतायुष: पुत्रपौत्रान् वृणीष्व बहून् पशून् हस्तिहिरण्यमश्वान्।
भूमेर्महदायतनं वृणीष्व स्वयं च जीव शरदो यावदिच्छसि ॥२३॥

(यमराज ने नचिकेता से कहा) सौ वर्ष जीने वाले पुत्र और पौत्रों को माँग लो बहुत से पशुओं को, घोड़े, हाथी, सुवर्ण, पृथ्वी के बड़े विस्तार को माँग लो और तुम स्वयं भी जितने वर्ष इच्छा करे जीवित रहो।

(Yama said): “O Nachiketa! Choose sons and grandsons who may live a hundred years, choose for a wealth of animals, for elephants, for gold and horses, choose for the entire Earth, and live yourself as long as you wish.”
